The Mudrock Research Group (MRG) brings together a broad spectrum of researchers within the Institute of GeoEnergy Engineering and the Lyell Centre, working on unconsolidated muds as well as consolidated mudrocks (mudstones, shales, siltstones), at the nanometre to decimetre plus scale, and from environments ranging from non-marine (e.g. lacustrine, fluviatile) to deep-water (turbidite, contourite, hemipelagite.

Interests include textural and compositional analysis, through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray tomography (XRT), porosity and permeability analysis and modelling (digital rock physics), mechanical deformation, seismic interpretation, and geochemical analysis (both organic and inorganic).
