About

The aim of the group is to encourage work and collaboration in all aspects related to biomineralization. Members of the group are affiliated within various schools and centres within Heriot-Watt University (EGIS, EPS and the Lyell Centre), although also including researchers from other Scottish universities and centres working in the field of biomineralization.

Current areas of research include biomineralization of carbonate systems (calcite and aragonite), within a variety of biosystems including microfossils and the calcareous tubes of serpulid, and hydroxyapatite in brachiopods and bone. Methods commonly used include optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and a variety of geochemical analysis techniques. Research interests range from environmental analysis, taxonomy and mechanical properties.
